You must have a good collection of chisels to complete any woodworking set. They come in different shapes, styles and sizes so it is important to have a general knowledge of the function of each category of chisel before you choose the right ones for your home shop.
This is an overview of chisels and each’s main purpose. There are some general ones, but there are also specialized project ones.
Bench Chisels with Beveled Edges

This tool is made for control. For dovetails, the sides are beveled. This one is a must have for any workshop. Some styles are hooped for extra strength but it is not really necessary.

Heavy Duty Chisels with Beveled Edges

These are only necessary for building a boat. This might be a handy tool with the piece is large.

The Registered Chisel.

These cover all chisels that are square. This chisel is great for timber-framing and some other woodworking projects.

The Japanese Bench Chisel

This is thicker than other chisels. These are usually more of a square design. These work extremely well with exotic tropical woods and soft woods. The Japanese version has a triangular and narrower edge than its Western counterpart.

Paring Chisels

When you are struggling to fit a joint and need to shave off just a hair the paring chisel is the perfect tool. It is long and thin. The are long and clumsy so they need better control. One hand can guide the top while the other applies pressure.

Mortise Chisels

This is the most classic of the chisels that are malleted so that the chisel can be driven into the wood and then with a levering action the waste is removed. These are sturdier. The angle of the blade is designed to handle abuse and their length allows for levering. These are good for any workshop. Another version of the Mortise Chisel is the Sash mortise chisel. This is lighter and used in more shallow jobs. The mortise chisel will be a good choice for drilling out a hole. There is also a heavy duty version of this tool. They have edges that are squared and the handles rounded. There are some special jobs that might need these.
