Home composting is undoubtedly one of the best things a home owner can do for the environment, it is also one of the easiest. Compost is simply a mixture of material that is decaying, such as lawn clipping and dry leaves, used to improve soil structure and provide nutrients, and knowing how to compost can just mean being aware of how to get this process going which is going to reduce this organic material to a point it will no longer decompose. Composting can be a quick way to help the soil and at the same time retain needed nutrients, moisture and air for the growth of the homeowners’ healthy vegetables and flowers.
Anyone can learn how to compost. Just about anything can be added to the compost bin but avoid cat, dog, and human waste. The compost pile should always have”greens” and “browns.” Browns will contain carbons, such as leaves, hay, and branches. Greens will be organic matter that contains nitrogen, like grass clippings, manure, vegetables, fruits, are a few such ingredients. Brown ingredients will usually be kind of bulky and it will produce air flow through the pile while greens are generally extremely high in moisture and will balance out the aridity of the browns.
Learning how to compost means discovering and excluding what not to put in a compost pile including pet waste, bones, meat, treated wood product, dairy products, peanut butter and other similar items.
Compost will require air so it is a good idea to have holes on your compost bin to provide air circulation. A compost pile on the ground needs to be turned or stirred at least once a week to give oxygen to the microbes so the can strive and to stop organisms from dominating the pile and making it smell. The compost also needs enough water to keep it about as damp as a wrung-out sponge.
Composting might not completely restore the soil, but it will help balance and enrich the soil in your garden. If we can all do our part by composting not only will we be helping the planet we can as well help out the over filled landfills.
